Kiku Room

Designing A Listening-Driven Hospitality Experience In The Heart Of San Diego

Location: San Diego
Industry: Hospitality / Listening Bar / Cocktail Lounge
Project Type: New Construction
Services: Audio System Design, Hospitality Sound Engineering, DSP & Control Integration, AV Infrastructure Design
Prepared By: Pineapple Audio

The Vision

Kiku Room was conceived as a modern listening bar designed around intentional sound rather than spectacle.

The vision was to create a space where music felt immersive and emotionally present without falling into the overly theatrical or gimmick-driven atmosphere often associated with traditional hi-fi bars.

Instead of designing a venue where audio became the centerpiece visually, the goal was to engineer an environment where sound naturally shaped the energy of the room — subtle, refined and deeply integrated into the hospitality experience itself.

The venue was designed around three primary guest environments:

  • Entry

  • Main Bar

  • Raised Seating Area

Each zone needed to feel connected while still maintaining its own atmosphere and energy.

The Challenge

Unlike conventional hospitality audio projects focused primarily on coverage and volume, Kiku Room required a system engineered around intentional listening.

The project demanded:

  • High-fidelity audio performance without visual excess

  • Consistent sonic character across multiple seating environments

  • A DJ-driven operational workflow

  • Flexible playback capability for open-format music programming

  • Seamless integration into a newly constructed hospitality environment

  • Infrastructure capable of supporting long-term scalability and tuning refinement

The client also wanted to avoid the harsh or fatiguing listening experience commonly found in many nightlife-focused venues.

The result needed to feel elevated, warm and immersive — balancing energy with comfort throughout normal operating hours.

Designing The Listening Experience

Pineapple Audio approached Kiku Room as an experience-first audio environment.

Rather than relying on excessive SPL or visually dominant speaker systems, the design focused on:

  • Controlled dispersion

  • Tonal consistency

  • Balanced low-frequency energy

  • Near-field listening comfort

  • Architectural integration

The system utilized high-performance coaxial loudspeaker platforms including the HD12C Loudspeaker and HD6C Loudspeaker to create an immersive yet controlled sound field throughout the venue.

Custom wood-grain cabinet finishes and carefully coordinated placement allowed the system to visually integrate into the space while preserving the venue’s design identity.

Low Frequency Without Overpowering The Room

One of the defining elements of the project involved delivering impactful low-frequency response without overwhelming conversation or creating listener fatigue.

To achieve this, Pineapple Audio incorporated a combination of compact installation subwoofers and integrated bench-style sub systems including:

  • iFIX17S G2

  • iFIX13S G2

  • Custom bench subwoofer systems

This approach allowed bass energy to feel present and immersive while remaining tightly controlled throughout the venue.

The result supported both relaxed hospitality service and DJ-driven evening programming without forcing dramatic operational shifts between day and night modes.

Intelligent DSP & System Control

At the core of the system architecture was the Xilica Solaro QR1 ecosystem.

The DSP environment was engineered to provide:

  • Precision tuning control

  • Multi-zone audio management

  • Dante-enabled networked audio distribution

  • Scalable system flexibility

  • Simplified operational workflows for management and DJs

Wall-mounted control interfaces utilizing the Xilica LUC1-NX platform provided intuitive day-to-day control while preserving the venue’s minimal visual aesthetic.

The infrastructure also allowed for future tuning refinements and operational expansion without requiring significant system redesign.

Infrastructure Designed For Hospitality Operations

Beyond sound quality, the project focused heavily on operational reliability and maintainability.

The AV infrastructure included:

  • Dedicated AV networking architecture

  • Managed PoE switching

  • Structured rack integration

  • Sequenced power management

  • Serviceable wall rack systems

  • Cable management and structured connectivity planning

Using platforms from Middle Atlantic, NETGEAR and other professional-grade infrastructure manufacturers, the system was designed to support long-term hospitality operations rather than temporary performance-focused deployment.

A Space Built Around Atmosphere

Unlike venues designed around visual spectacle, Kiku Room was engineered around emotional atmosphere.

Music flows naturally through the environment, creating energy and intimacy without overpowering the guest experience.

The system allows DJs and operators to shape the room dynamically while maintaining the warm, refined hospitality identity envisioned from the beginning of the project.

The result is a listening-driven hospitality environment where technology supports the experience quietly — allowing guests to feel immersed in the music without becoming consciously aware of the system itself.
