The Challenge

Luxury hospitality environments depend on invisible technology.

Guests should experience seamless music, lighting and video throughout the property without ever thinking about the infrastructure behind it. At Grand Hyatt Vail, that experience had been disrupted by the failure of the property’s aging control head-end system.

While many of the hotel’s core audio components remained operational, the centralized control environment that coordinated audio, lighting and media distribution across the property had effectively failed.

The result impacted multiple guest-facing environments including:

  • Lobby areas

  • Restaurants

  • Pool and pool bar

  • Spa and fitness spaces

  • Café dining

  • Lounge environments

Without a functioning control layer, hotel staff lost the ability to manage large portions of the guest experience dynamically.

Lighting systems defaulted to static operation, video routing became inconsistent and operational flexibility across the property was significantly reduced.

Immediate Recovery & Stabilization

Before long-term modernization planning could begin, the immediate priority was restoring functionality to critical guest-facing spaces.

Pineapple Audio deployed temporary recovery infrastructure onsite, including installation of:

  • Powersoft Unica 8M amplifier systems

  • Powersoft WM Touch interfaces

  • Temporary PoE switching infrastructure

  • Media playback integration for multiple hospitality zones

This rapid stabilization effort restored operational music playback to key environments including:

  • Lobby

  • Makoto

  • Gessner

The intervention allowed hotel operations to resume while the broader modernization strategy was developed.

Evaluating A Complex Hospitality Ecosystem

The assessment revealed that the property’s underlying infrastructure still contained significant operational potential.

However, years of layered systems, outdated control architecture and fragmented integrations created operational inefficiencies that limited flexibility and maintainability.

Key findings included:

  • Legacy Savi control infrastructure failure

  • Fragmented audio routing across floors and departments

  • Independent amplifier zones lacking centralized coordination

  • Video systems are tied to an outdated distribution architecture

  • Lighting systems dependent on unavailable control interfaces

  • AV systems potentially operating on unsecured guest networks

  • Inconsistent rack organization and infrastructure documentation

The property also faced operational limitations because hotel IT staff could not directly modify portions of the AV configuration without relying on external providers.

Rebuilding The Control Environment

To modernize the hospitality experience while improving long-term maintainability, Pineapple Audio developed a new networked AV control strategy centered around the Q-SYS Core 24f ecosystem.

The proposed architecture was designed to unify:

  • Audio routing

  • Video distribution

  • Zone management

  • User control interfaces

  • Future lighting integration

  • Remote operational support

The updated system strategy included:

  • Centralized DSP processing

  • Dante-enabled network audio

  • Scalable AV-over-IP infrastructure

  • Touchscreen control interfaces

  • Redundant operational pathways

  • Improved hospitality staff usability

Rather than replacing every component unnecessarily, the modernization strategy focused on preserving viable infrastructure while rebuilding the operational intelligence layer controlling the property.

Hospitality-Focused Audio Modernization

The assessment also identified opportunities to improve overall guest experience quality in several hospitality environments.

Recommendations included:

  • Upgraded loudspeaker coverage in Makoto

  • Additional low-frequency reinforcement in restaurant bar spaces

  • Separation of common audio zones into properly managed amplifier channels

  • Updated amplifier profiling and limiter configuration

  • Transition to Dante-based playback and playlist systems

Using platforms from QSC, Powersoft and Bose, the design prioritized operational consistency, scalability and long-term hospitality performance.

Modernizing Video & Lighting Infrastructure

Beyond audio, the project required a broader operational strategy for video distribution and lighting control throughout the resort.

Existing café video systems remained tied into hotel entertainment infrastructure rather than dedicated hospitality-focused content distribution, limiting operational flexibility.

Pineapple Audio proposed transitioning toward a modern AV-over-IP video architecture utilizing Aurora Multimedia technology to improve:

  • Channel routing

  • Source management

  • Scalability

  • System flexibility

  • Future expansion capability

At the same time, the team explored strategies for preserving portions of the existing lighting ecosystem through selective integration rather than complete replacement — helping reduce unnecessary reinvestment while restoring centralized operational control.

Infrastructure Designed For Long-Term Operations

A major focus of the modernization effort involved improving maintainability and operational visibility behind the scenes.

The proposed infrastructure work included:

  • Removal of obsolete rack equipment

  • Rack consolidation and cleanup

  • Elimination of unnecessary analog signal paths

  • Dedicated AV networking segmentation

  • Structured Dante audio deployment

  • Remote support capability

  • Enhanced equipment documentation

The goal was not only to restore functionality, but to create an AV ecosystem hotel operations teams could manage more confidently moving forward.

The Result

The Grand Hyatt Vail assessment established a roadmap for transforming a fragmented and aging hospitality AV environment into a modern, scalable and operationally efficient system.

Rather than approaching the property as a simple repair project, Pineapple Audio developed a strategy centered around:

  • Operational reliability

  • Guest experience consistency

  • Long-term scalability

  • Infrastructure simplification

  • Hospitality-focused control workflows

The result positioned the resort for a significantly more cohesive audio, video and lighting experience across the property while minimizing unnecessary system replacement.
